The role of “Design engineer’ did not become mainstream until very recently. I would never consider myself as a full engineer, but I support the shift of encouraging designers to start thinking with an engineering mindset. If the designer creates something that isn’t possible to create in the timeline, it doesn't matter how functional or pretty the design is. More importantly, asking engineers to do small items like copy changes and colour shifts, adding a new section is slowly becoming an outdated task, as now designers are equipped with the knowledge to do it themselves.
I think using AI as a tool is incredibly useful to expand on our existing knowledge, it will never replace the design thinking. I learned to open a PR, to know roughly how systems work, how to make queries in the database, and what's actually hard versus what just looks hard, enough to have a different conversation with the people I work with. The biggest thing it changed wasn't my output, it was my credibility.
