fixing the cold start problem

Year

A now rookie problem, but an important one to learn firsthand, setting up onboarding flows and realising users were dropping off immediately was disappointing. Getting them to do their first core loop action meant they were 85% more likely to stay another day. I seeded the core loop into the onboarding, instead of telling users what you can do, I guided them to doing it. Users can’t be expected to remember information that was explained in onboarding, they learn by doing. I made the first challenge a fun piece, so they would enter the app knowing exactly what to expect. Their first experience once in the app was no longer emptiness and confusion but clear on the action to do, so they felt confident to explore the other parts of the app.

This improved the core loop completions immediately. Users were 61% more likely to complete a real core loop action on the first day, and then snowball effect to coming back tomorrow to do it again.
